FDE Cost and Salary

What a forward deployed engineer costs in 2026

The average forward deployed engineer (FDE) salary in the US is about $179,000 base, and median total pay is about $216,000. Hiring one adds a recruiter fee near 25% of first-year base and an 8-12 week search. Contract listings ran about $142-$300 an hour. Vendor FDE teams can bill up to about $200,000 a quarter per use case.

I'm Christian Vismara, co-founder and CTO of Digital Kitchen, and I sell this work, so weigh my numbers with that in mind: market figures come with sources, and my own prices sit in their own section near the end. New to the role? Start with what a forward deployed engineer does.

What is the average forward deployed engineer salary?

About $179,000 in base pay on average, according to Indeed, and about $216,000 in median total compensation on Levels.fyi once equity and bonus are counted.

More US pay data, 2026

Lightcast, median advertised pay: about $188,000

Levels.fyi, 90th percentile total compensation: about $363,000

Levels.fyi, Palantir median: about $278,000

OpenAI, FDE base salary band: $185,000-$325,000 plus equity

Anthropic, US FDE posting: $280,000-$320,000 base

Pay is high across the board because the pool is tiny. Gartner estimates only about 2,000 active FDEs exist. US postings went from about 200 in all of 2024 to more than 5,200 in January-July 2026, according to Lightcast, and a recruiter quoted in The Pragmatic Engineer says maybe 10% of engineers want the role.

In five FDE listings I checked on Built In NYC in October 2026, advertised ranges went from $135,000-$175,000 at Draftwise to $237,000-$369,000 at Legora, and the New York FDE page lists all five.

Is the $1M forward deployed engineer salary real?

Not that anyone has shown. There's no named person and no verified offer at that level, and the figure traces back to a report by a company that sells AI interview tools.

Treat it as marketing. Even high-end pay sits far lower: the 90th percentile of total compensation on Levels.fyi is about $363,000, and the top of Legora's New York range is $369,000. If someone quotes the million-dollar FDE to justify a budget, ask to see the offer letter.

What does a full-time FDE hire cost beyond the salary?

A recruiter fee of around 25% of first-year base, which is Paraform's stated fee, plus benefits and equity. Then add the cost nobody invoices you for: 8-12 weeks of search while the project waits.

Benefits depend on your company, and the number is one your finance team already knows. Expect equity in the offer at a startup, and startups do a lot of this hiring: Paraform says 59% of the companies hiring FDEs through its marketplace are seed to Series A.

The wait hurts more. For 8-12 weeks the pilot that justified the hire stays where it is, and the people who were supposed to get their time back keep doing the work by hand. You're also bidding against far bigger budgets: OpenAI launched its Deployment Company in May 2026 with more than $4B from 19 investors, and Salesforce committed to a 1,000-person FDE team.

The title is its own risk: Gartner warns about "FDE washing", ordinary consulting relabeled as FDE. My guide to hiring a forward deployed engineer covers what to check before you make an offer.

What is the hourly rate for a contract forward deployed engineer?

On Go Fractional, a fractional talent marketplace, one FDE-style listing paid $142-$162 an hour, and its benchmarks average about $157 an hour. Fractional AI-lead contracts listed in New York in 2026 ran $175-$300 an hour, in listings we tracked at Digital Kitchen.

Part-time costs less in total and gets less done inside your systems. Go Fractional lists fractional GenAI engineers from $5,000 a month for 5-10 hours a week, which buys reviews and advice more than building.

What do AI studios charge for forward deployed work?

Small AI studios quote a paid diagnostic at around $5,000-$15,000, and around $25,000-$50,000 to take one workflow into production.

That buys a team and a fixed scope instead of one person's hours. The diagnostic comes first because nobody can give an honest price for the build before someone has seen the real process and the real systems. Check how the engagement ends, though: a fixed price that stops at a demo, with no documentation, is a cheap way to buy a second project.

How much do vendor FDE teams cost?

Gartner puts the consulting fees of vendor FDEs, the engineers sent by the platform you're buying, at up to about $200,000 per quarter per use case, as Channel Dive reported on 30 September 2026.

The larger cost shows up after the invoices. Gartner expects 70% of enterprises to abandon agentic AI built by vendor FDEs by 2028, because costs climb and they can't evolve the systems themselves. It also expects fewer than 20% of FDE engagements to feed the vendor's core product, so don't count on your custom build turning into a supported feature. Gartner's advice is to settle ownership and the exit plan from day one.

Full-time hire vs contractor vs studio vs vendor FDE: what each costs

For one workflow that needs to work this quarter, a contractor or a studio costs less than a hire because you skip the fee and the search. Hire full-time when the work never ends.

What moves the price of an FDE engagement?

Four things: days on site, the number of systems the work touches, the compliance around the data, and who carries the pager after launch.

Days on site. OpenAI's FDE postings mention up to 50% travel. Palantir expects its FDEs to spend around 25% of their time on site, according to The Pragmatic Engineer. Those days are where the undocumented exceptions show up, and a contractor can't sell them to anyone else, so they cost more.

Systems touched. Every system of record brings its own access requests and edge cases. In RSM's July 2026 survey of 1,030 middle-market companies in the US and Canada, firms with moderate or limited pilot success cited data quality (53%) and integration (47%) most. A workflow that lives in one tool costs less than one that crosses your ERP and your helpdesk.

Compliance. When money or regulated data moves, a human approves it, and that approval step gets built and tested like any other feature. Security reviews take calendar time, and calendar time is billable.

The pager. If the engineer stays on call after launch, you're paying a retainer. When your team takes over, the handover has to be real, with runbooks and evals your own people can run. AWS says it built its $1B forward deployed engineering organization so customers are self-sufficient when a deployment ends, which is the right goal whoever you hire.

What I charge for forward deployed work

Two ways: embedded in your team as an interim forward-deployed engineer, or by the hour for one scoped piece of work.

My prices

Interim forward-deployed engineer. $16,000-$20,000 per month for 2-3 days a week inside your team, on site in New York or remote. We agree the days and the first 30-day goal before I start.

Hourly FDE work. $175-$250 per hour for scoped pieces, such as a stalled integration or evals for a system you already run.

Team-sized work. When the work needs more than one engineer, I bring Digital Kitchen, the studio I co-founded. Its Deployment Diagnostic is $7,500 fixed and credited against the Production Sprint, which runs $25,000-$60,000 fixed for one workflow live in production.

I don't take full-time W-2 roles. If the job is permanent, hire, and use the salary data above as your budget.

Over a full year, the interim rate adds up to about what a full-time FDE earns in total pay. It's built to end sooner: the goal is one workflow in production and a team that runs it without me, with no recruiter fee and no 8-12 week wait first.

I've been building software for 11+ years and have built 10+ AI products end to end. At Chatterbox I took over as lead engineer and rebuilt the platform through a seed round and the company's B2C to B2B pivot.

Not sure an FDE is the right role? I compared FDEs with consultants and solutions engineers on a separate page. For technical leadership more than hands in your systems, see my fractional CTO pricing.
